Diploma in Substance Use Interventions

This program prepares participants for entry-level professional certification by providing evidence-based information on Substance Use Disorders treatment and facilitating hands-on activities. This program, developed by the Colombo Plan Drug Advisory Programme and international organizations, advances addiction professionals’ understanding of SUD-related issues through the dissemination of the Universal Treatment Curriculum (UTC). It demonstrates the science of addiction, the continuum of care, and legal and ethical considerations within the country system.

Module Description

This module offers a comprehensive introduction to the key concepts, tools, and strategies used in substance use interventions.

Module Objectives

You’ll learn about psychoactive substances, addiction science, and recovery stages. You’ll also gain skills in using screening tools, assessing substance use, and developing person-centered treatment plans.

Working with Families of People with Substance Use Disorders (SUD)

Substance Use Disorder (SUD) is a chronic condition that deeply affects families. This course focuses on science-based interventions for individuals with SUD and their families, exploring how recovery influences family dynamics, with particular attention to cultural factors.

Module Description

This course equips professionals with the knowledge and tools to support families affected by substance use disorders (SUD). Participants will explore the impact of SUD on family dynamics, learn strategies to engage and assist families and develop effective communication skills to foster resilience and support recovery. Focused on practical approaches, the course aims to enhance professionals’ ability to involve families in treatment and long-term recovery.

Module Objectives

By the end of this module, participants will have a solid understanding of the core concepts and theories behind family-based SUD treatment, be able to distinguish among various family therapy approaches and demonstrate proficiency in fundamental family counseling techniques.

Module Outline

  • Day 1: Understanding the Family, Impact of Parental SUD on Children, Impact of SUD on Parents of Adult Children, and Family Roles in Addiction.
  • Day 2: Theoretical underpinnings of Family Therapy and Family Counseling Approaches
  • Day 3: Family Counseling Approaches (continued), Integrated Family Counseling, and Psychoeducation.
